Why do Medicare and Medicaid matter?

In the 20th century, we took bold action by creating Medicare and Medicaid to care for seniors and people with disabilities and allow them to live with independence and dignity. For decades, these programs have kept millions of seniors and people with disabilities out of poverty, and enabled them to live at home in their communities.

But today, we are facing a new set of realities with the Elder Boom, and we’re now feeling the impacts of a new gaping hole in our social safety net — how we will meet our long-term care needs.

Medicare doesn’t cover long-term care, and while Medicaid does cover home care and nursing home costs, families have to spend down their hard-earned assets to qualify. What this means is that the vast majority of families are left largely on their own to care for their aging loved ones, and going broke to cover the costs.

As a nation, we have yet to seriously grapple with how we provide care for our parents and grandparents. These programs, while critically important, are no longer enough, and it’s time we address the emerging 21st century issues facing our families and come up with the caregiving solutions we need today.

Medicare and Medicaid must be modernized to address our seniors’ new long-term care needs and the increasing demands on our nation’s careforce.

Join us on Thursday, July 30th to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of Medicare and Medicaid, and to call for the solutions we need today for 21st-century families and caregivers! Add your voice.
