Caring Across Generations Continues to Stand On the Side of Justice in DACA/DAPA Lawsuit

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Supreme Court announced a disappointing 4-4 split decision in United States v. Texas. The lawsuit challenged the legality of President Obama’s executive actions on immigration, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA.) These executive actions would provide legal work authorization and deportation protection for up to six million undocumented individuals and the parents of lawful permanent residents and U.S. citizens.

“Caregiving is the work that supports all other work. Many people would not be able to remain in the workforce without the support of caregivers for their children and elderly parents, and nearly half of the country’s caregivers are immigrants,” said Josephine Kalipeni, Policy and Partnerships Director for Caring Across Generations. “With 10,000 Americans turning 65 every day, our country faces a serious increase in demand for care at the same time we are struggling with a growing shortage of qualified care providers. Sensible and fair immigration solutions are critical to providing the quality care we will need. We are very disappointed in this decision, but will continue working with our partners towards comprehensive immigration reform and holding our elected officials accountable to ensuring that all families can stay together and care for one another.”

DACA and DAPA would provide real, sensible reforms to an immigration system that is failing our country and our economy. 61 percent of Americans favor DACA and DAPA as approaches to relaxing immigration policy for some undocumented people. These proposals are good first steps in the right direction toward ensuring that families can stay together and live without fear of separation in anticipation of comprehensive federal immigration reform passed by a Supreme Court with no vacancies. Caring Across Generations stands with our partners, Jobs with Justice and the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and remains committed to the fight for a fair and just national immigration policy.
