Resisting efforts to take away our care, the Caring Majority prevails

Category:

In the middle of the night last night, close to 2am Eastern, the Senate voted down the final plan to take health care away from millions of people. Our health care is safe for now!

If you stayed up watching C-SPAN like I did, I’m sure we went through the same whirlwind of emotions. At first, nervous about the upcoming vote, then hopeful as it looked like some Republicans would vote no, then distraught as some key moderates voted yes, then finally joyous as three Republicans — Senators Collins, Murkowski, and McCain — cast their votes to kill the bill.

But through it all, I never lost hope. Over the last few weeks and months, I’ve seen the incredible work all of you have done to save health care. Hundreds of Caring Across activists like you made phone calls — to your own Senators and to the key Republicans who held the line. More than 5,000 of you joined millions of others in signing petitions urging the Senate to protect our care. And your photos and stories from town hall meetings kept me going when things looked dark. We owe huge thanks to everyone who took some part in this win.

Despite the efforts of Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, and Donald Trump to take away vital care from millions of people, our voices – and our collective sanity – prevailed. A historically appalling process to pass a historically appalling policy (or lack thereof) finally came to an end last night on the Senate floor.

We can celebrate and breathe a temporary sigh of relief. Every Republican bill — every Republican proposal to strip health insurance from millions, raise premiums, reduce choices and cut care — ultimately failed. Instead, Republican leaders left behind a trail of lies and broken promises to cover more people and not touch Medicaid or Medicare.

In a time when our country is aging faster than any other time in our history, and caregivers are barely getting by, our families need more support, not less. We know our care system is not perfect. We are clear that we must defend what we have and create what we want and need. And last night, our work, every action we took, held the line. We are clear that, united, the voice of the Caring Majority is powerful.

While we will celebrate and breathe a sigh of relief, further threats to the care and support our families rely on loom ahead. Potential attacks against Medicaid still threaten our ability to live and age in our homes and communities for as long as possible. The jobs and health of millions of in-home caregivers, and millions more people, are still on the line. We will remain vigilant and ready to respond to any of these threats compromising our ability to care for one another.

It is time to come to the table and build on the the ACA and Medicaid a care infrastructure that truly works for those of us who need care, and those of us who do the hard and steady work to provide it.

Will you take a moment to tell us what you have in mind for the future of health care? What do you want to see in your ideal health care plan? What can’t our families afford to lose? Let us know what you have in mind.

We know that new threats to the way we care are ahead. And we know that what we protected needs serious improvements. But this time, we want to make sure that in addition to fighting to save what we have, we are also fighting for the things we all need. You are the expert. Tell us what you need.

This was an incredible victory that couldn’t have happened without everyone’s hard work. So most importantly — THANK YOU to all of you who have done your part. This victory is yours!
