Caring Across Generations Applauds Schumer’s Red Line On Medicaid Cuts In Default Fight

Schumer: “We must work to protect and strengthen programs like Medicaid. Not put them on the chopping block.

Igor Bobic tweet: Schumer in floor speech calls on Republicans to rule out cuts to Medicaid as it relates to debt ceiling fight in similar way to SS & Medicare. “Are Republicans also going to target Medicaid? Are Republicans going to strip away coverage for 1 in 4 Americans? We really don’t know”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 16, 2023) – In response to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recent statements on Medicaid, Ai-jen Poo, executive director at Caring Across Generations, released the following statement:

“We applaud Leader Chuck Schumer for drawing a clear red line around any cuts to Medicaid in the upcoming fight to avoid an irresponsible default crisis. Threatening cuts to Medicaid is not just morally reprehensible, it covers one in four Americans and would cause immense suffering, especially to those with low incomes, complex care needs and disabilities, children, older adults, and pregnant people. Cuts to Medicaid would endanger the millions of people who receive aging and disability care in their own homes and communities. That’s why it’s one of the most popular programs with an overwhelming number of Americans who oppose cuts.

Medicaid is pro-family, and this country needs strong Family First programs that support every type of family in every part of the country with the tools they need to do well and build a good life. We demand Congress to save Medicaid and protect health care coverage because care can’t wait.”

Caring Across Generations is a national campaign of family caregivers, care workers, disabled people, and aging adults working to transform the way we care in this country so that care is accessible, affordable and equitable— and our systems of care enable everyone to live and age with dignity.

To achieve our vision, we transform cultural norms and narratives about aging, disability and care; win federal and state-level policies; and build power amongst the people touched by care. For more information, visit caringacross.org.
