SCOTUS upholds Medicaid Recipients’ Rights
WASHINGTON D.C. – In response to the Supreme Court ruling in favor of Talevski in Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, Indiana v. Talevski, Nicole Jorwic, chief of advocacy and campaigns at Caring Across Generations, released the following statement:
“We applaud the Supreme Court of the United States’ decision today that upholds the rights of the 85 million people, especially low-income people, older adults and disabled people, who depend on Medicaid for care.
“This is a victory not only for Medicaid beneficiaries but also for the thousands of disability rights, aging and Medicaid advocates who have tirelessly and courageously fought for equality, justice and freedom for people, especially disabled people, to live independent lives and participate in making personal medical decisions.
“In an era when our health, as well as access to care we need, is often under attack and undervalued, today’s ruling is a tremendous victory in the fight to safeguard anti-discrimination progress set forth decades ago. Forcing people into treatment against their will is a violation of their civil rights and is the opposite of the compassionate country we strive to be. We all deserve a care system that treats us with dignity and respect, and this decision ensures that right can be enforced.”
